Year 5
2021-2022
Viking day
On Thursday 9th December, Year 5 had their Viking day. In history this term, we have been learning about Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. To end the unit, we had a whole day focusing on who the Vikings were and how they lived. We learnt about the Lindisfarne raid and the children wrote newspaper reports about the event. We built Viking longships and created our own bookmarks using runes. The children had a fantastic time and looked great in their Viking costumes!
In year 5 this term, we have been learning about Earth and Space in Science. The children have been learning about the theories people used to have about the Earth and our Solar System and comparing them to what we know today. They have been learning about the planets in our Solar System, exploring how we get night and day using torches and globes and looking at how the Earth and other planets revolve around the sun.

2020-2021
Harry Potter
As part of our English unit, Year 5 were transported into the world of Harry Potter. They concocted powerful potions, developed their quirky Quidditch skills, designed their own mystical creatures and created their very own wands! It was certainly a wow day to remember!
In our English unit in year 5, we are learning how to write good story endings using the story UP! As part of our hook to get the children excited about the unit, we created our own 3d houses and attached balloons to see if the balloons would lift the houses into the sky just like in the film. This was also an opportunity to get some science learning in as the children had to come up with a hypothesis of whether the balloons would actually lift the house up and why this was possible. They children had a lot of fun doing this activity.
2019-2020
Spring Term
This term, Year 5 have been learning about Earth and Beyond. During this topic, the children have had discussions about which they thought was the most important out of the Sun, the Earth and the Moon. They have also learnt how day and night occurs and learnt about the theories of the Solar System. To help the children understand why the moon looks different at different times of the day, they created posters and used biscuits to show the eight phases of the moon. It was a really fun afternoon and the children thoroughly enjoyed it!

Autumn Term
In year 5 this term, children have been learning all about Forces; the different types of Forces and their effect. Recently they learned about Friction and how Friction occurs. They carried out their own fair test investigation on friction. Their enquiry question was to find out which would be the best footwear for doing PE. Pupils enjoyed the challenge of thinking about what variables would change and how to make sure that their fair test was fair. They came up with their own hypothesis and at the end of the investigation wrote up their conclusion and compared this to their hypothesis. They learned about a new unit of measure (newton) and a new measuring tool (newton meter) which is used to measure Force. Below are photos of children engaged in their investigation.
