BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
YEAR 6
After a week and a half of intensive basketball training with Mr.Fortune, the seven hard working year 6 pupils were ready. The team had arrived at Denbigh High school and straight away Beechwood were nervous.
Beechwood’s first match was against Icknield and as soon as the whistle went, the game was ON! Beechwood was keeping to their tactic (ZONE DEFENCE). After the first goal was scored by Hasnain, all of Beechwood were very delighted. The match was tough but Mr Fortune’s defensive strategy meant they only scored 2 baskets (4 points). By the end of the match Hasnain Shah (Top Goal Scorer and Most Valuable Player) had scored 3 baskets (6 points), Nathan Davis had scored 1 basket (2 points) and Haleema Mahmood had scored 1 basket (2 points). The Beechwood team were VERY HAPPY!
The team’s second match- even before the whistle blew- was set to be a tough match, with Mr Fortune saying how good Ferrars were. The game started and straight away Beechwood knew they had a challenge. Hasnain scored first, this lifted the team’s hopes. With about 60 seconds to go, Ferrars were up 8-6 but Beechwood were resilient and fought ‘til the final whistle. With an amazing basket from Hasnain we were level with 20 seconds to go. Then as the ball left Hasnain’s hands the whistle went. The ball circled the ring and then…GOAL! At the last second Hasnain had scored, making the score 10-8. Scorers for the game: Tahsin Choudhury (4 points), Hasnain Shah (6 points).
The team had won 50% of their games and were very pleased. Now, our next match was against Wigmore and with 3 beautiful baskets by Hasnain, 2 slick baskets from Tahsin, and 1 basket from Nathan Beechwood were 12 points up. Our tight defences meant that Wigmore only got to score 1 basket (2 points).
Now on their last tournament game it was a comfortable match with Hasnain scoring 4 baskets, Tahsin scoring 2 and Haleema the 1. Our Zone Defence forced Beach Hill to take risky shots and consequently they missed them leaving the score 12-0 to the Brilliant Beechwood Basketball Team.
Friendly Games
Beechwood vs. Walluds
WON 8 – 4
Beechwood vs. St. Margaretes
WON 14 – 2
Beechwood vs. St. Martins
LOST 6 – 2
After winning 6 matches in a row, the Beechwood Team had become very cocky and abandoned their roles in the Zone Defence. This caused St. Martins to get to a good shooting position meaning they scored three baskets (6 points) and only allowed Beechwood to score once.
REMEMBER TO CONGRATULATE ANY OF THE CHILDREN IN THE PHOTO BELOW FOR DOING SUCH A FAB JOB IN REPRESENTING THEIR SCHOOL!
